Craftsmanship

Artistry – Let The Magic Unfold

There is something innate in how a craftsperson handles their material that brings out the very best in its form. Real talent sings. And when that music and exemplary design meet, the result can be something truly special. At LyZadie Design Studio, we seek out talent, skill, and experience and have enjoyed working and collaborating with the very best makers New Zealand has to offer.

It’s a mutually beneficial relationship we relish, one of learning, growth and change. The varied skill sets and ideas these collaborations generate add to the initial spark of each design. Whether through materials, techniques or output, in our collaboration and design process with these extraordinary craftspeople, extraordinary things are achieved.

We are proud to support local New Zealand makers and businesses by having our creations made here.

We value craftsmanship as a luxury, having something that is made by hand and by true artisans is a rare and special experience.

Meet The Makers

Meeting Amie Redpath in her studio in Whangarei Heads brought this passion for form, and a love of rock together in the most organic and graceful manner – focusing on the stone, urging new work out of ancient materials. The two women spoke at length about a multitude of ideas and projects and DANCEOFGEOMETRY came to life.

Peter has a keen eye for beauty and a delicate hand with construction that belies the sharp strength of the material.  Peter is an obvious choice to add to the collaboration team for the ReLEATHERED, BLACK TREE FERN, WHITECLOUD and DANCEOFGEOMETRY collections that holds metal at its core. Working together is both exciting and inspiring, and it is a privilege to work with such a talented craftsperson.

Monmouth Glass Studio – Makers Of Exquisite Glass Objects.

With two of the best glass artists, in New Zealand at the helm, Monmouth Glass Studio was a natural choice for us when we wanted to bring the fire and light of glass into a new collection. Isaac and Stephen are working on a number of projects for us and watching them at work is like seeing the heart of the earth open up and let out its magic. We are learning so much from the mesmerising process of watching these two experts work.

They are a family of furniture brands focused on people. They care about life and design for it. They share ideas and knowledge to create products that enhance life.

There is no substitute for experience. And that experience drives the staff at PLN Group to demand excellence from every part of their construction process. In the cutting and sewing division, this means Saville Row precision is demanded in even the most unforgiving of upholstery fabrics. Equally, the cabinet makers focus on ensuring the framework of each and every piece of furniture is crafted well beyond what industry would consider standard. For thirty years they have crafted bespoke pieces for some of the world’s most exacting clients, and now we are excited to work with their talented team to bring to life one of our new collections for 2019.

By re-using under-valued resources for creating her design pieces, Ronja Schipper of re:purpose aims to highlight the relationship with our at risk environment. Her range of jewellery is hand made in NZ from discarded bike inner tube, cleaned & polished with massage oil & enhanced with new findings. We were so privileged to collaborate with Ronja in our latest collection – the TUI Collection.

Hand-cutting each feather, binding them into bundles with waxed cord and fixing them to the Pinatex fabric is a unique experience.

Sam James Furniture is a bespoke fine furniture studio/workshop, hand-making custom designed furniture to order. Crafted using traditional and modern techniques we create objects that will last and be loved by generations.

A mixture of machine and hand tooling techniques are used to create one offs and limited editions from all kinds of timbers, including New Zealand natives and sustainably grown and imported European and American timber.

There are some people that just have a natural affinity with producing beautiful, timeless furniture. Sam is one of those people and everything he touches seems to bare this stamp of quality and care. The ReLEATHERED collection which came out in 2018, is born of a shared love of New Zealand timber and its warm, rich tones.

Terra Firma – Earth Building Company

Paul and Finn Gereats from Terra Firma make rammed earth buildings. Using a mixture of selected aggregates, including gravel, sand, silt and clay they ram the earth into a structural arrangement called the form.

The EARTH&SKY collection which came out in 2020, is born of a shared love of rammed earth and its beautiful materiality.

Our 2018 FLOW collection is a collaboration with Treology, a business that has held luxury furniture making in its heart for 150 years. Their commitment to nature is exemplary, rescuing timber to give it another chance at life. With our designs and their focus on sourcing sustainable materials and impeccable craftsmanship, every piece in this graceful collection is timeless.

We rescue trees from rivers & fiords of New Zealand and craft them into beautiful objects that merge the line between luxury furniture & functional art.

Treology.
