LyZadie Design Studio • Timeless Elegance: A Conversation with Emma Hoyle

In the ever-evolving world of interior design, Emma Hoyle stands out as a beacon of taste and smart design. With over eight years of experience navigating the ebb and flow of design trends, Emma has cultivated a unique approach that marries enduring style with client-centric creativity. Based in Auckland, New Zealand, her work reflects a deep appreciation for both global influences and local craftsmanship. The team at LyZadie Design sat down with her to chat about her process and how she is so successful at centering her clients within the design process.

Like most designers, Emma’s design journey begins with a meticulous briefing process, diving deep into her clients’ aspirations and lifestyle needs. “We review their reference imagery and find a commonality that begins to build the design direction and visual language,” she explains. This collaborative approach ensures that each project is not just aesthetically pleasing, but deeply resonant with the client’s vision. But from here Emma dives deeper, providing inspiration from both global design icons and New Zealand’s natural environment. She cites mid-century masters like Pierre Jeanneret, Maria Pergay, Eileen Gray, Willy Rizzo, Phillip Johnson and more contemporary designers such as John Pawson, Vincent van Duysen, Piet Boon, Kelly Wearstler and Banda Property as references to broaden her client’s visions for their spaces. This breadth of influence allows her to create spaces that feel both fresh and timeless.

When it comes to materials and local talent, Emma is passionate about showcasing the best of New Zealand. She highlights the use of locally-made wool and sustainably produced Abodo timbers in her projects. “What we are seeing more than ever is innovation, incredible craftsmanship and conscious efforts towards sustainability,” Emma notes, pointing to our founder Lyzadie Renault as a prime example of this ethos.

Emma sees a distinct New Zealand vernacular emerging in interior design, one that’s gaining international recognition. “Our homes are becoming more sympathetic to the landscape and context,” she observes. Within the LyZadie Design Studio collection for example she appreciates how the works are “honest and sustainably sourced or recycled from certain locations across New Zealand…motifs are often drawn from the natural environment, the forms are soft and resemble the surroundings from which they came.”

And sustainability is a key consideration in Emma’s practice. She strives to create enduring designs that are gentle on the environment, often incorporating vintage or antique pieces to add depth and character to a space. “As designers, we have to be conscious of what we are specifying and designing, our intention is for our designs to endure with time, as well as being gentle on the environment.”

For those considering working with a designer on their own journey, Emma offers this advice: “Trust in us. Be willing and open-minded to push the boundaries.” It’s this spirit of trust and collaboration that allows designers to truly transform spaces.

New Zealand’s design scene is flourishing, with unique voices that speak to both local roots and global sensibilities. The work of designers like Emma Hoyle exemplifies this exciting fusion, offering clients the opportunity to inhabit spaces that are not just beautiful, but meaningful, sustainable, and truly of their place. For those inspired by this vision of design, exploring the creations of LyZadie Design Studio could be the perfect next step in bringing a piece of New Zealand’s natural beauty and innovative spirit into your own home.
