LyZadie Design Studio • Walking Gently On The Earth

You Can Expect To See The Rich Tapestry Of New Zealand’s Nature And People Eternalised In Wood, Stone, Rammed Earth, Glass, Running Metals, New Materials And Leather. Exceptional Materials That Stand The Test Of Time And That Hold The Warmth Of The Planet Deep In Their Form.

While the world’s attention has been understandably focused on the global pandemic still sweeping the planet, the looming threat of climate change has not gone away. It remains an ever-present note to humanity to consider the future we want to live through. At LyZadie Design Studio we are mindful of the impact our choices make on your choices. We are mindful of our responsibility to tread lightly on our earth.

To this end our designs have always focused on making a minimal environmental impact. We look for new materials that can operate in a circular economy – ensuring that the finite resources available aren’t exhausted by our manufacturing processes. Where possible, we use resources that have already seen a life, and bring them out of the line-up for landfill into new, lasting designs. What’s more we pride ourselves in providing transparency in that manufacture process. We have committed to ensuring sustainability is at the heart of what we do. You can check out our sustainability pledge here.

RE-USE

Within our timber collections, FLOW and BLACKTREE FERN, the hero is the Rescued River Matai and Rimu. Timbers native to New Zealand, the raw logs are sourced from the rivers of the South Island where the icy waters weather and colour them into gorgeous tones. But importantly to us, and to our makers Treology, this timber is a rescued resource, one used without impact on the current tree cover of Aotearoa. Starting life in the wild South Island, the timber comes to us from the beautiful West Coast rivers but its final journey to you recognises this lineage, with a GPS location marker under each piece to record where the tree came from.

RE-IMAGINE

For our latest collection EARTH&SKY, we re-imagine the form of natural materials. From the earth beneath our feet, we build the supports of our tables, connecting us on all levels with the earth. Like our timber collections, these works have the origin coordinates as part of their construction history. The provenance in the clay is important, it’s a rich natural resource, and knowing the place it has been brought from, in Te Kuiti near Pakeho, New Zealand, brings another level of connection to the work. From earth to table, table to soul. These are strong, sustainable, earth conscious pieces.

“Real, honest and quality materials touch us on a deeper level.

We want to reconnect with nature through materials, and create designs that last a lifetime.”

RE-PURPOSE

Saving materials from landfill and turning them into objects of beauty is particularly satisfying as a creative. For our ReLEATHERED collection, we salvaged old leather belts, using both their materials and their history to create our pieces. They bring a wealth of antiquity and breathe new life to something that would otherwise be trashed. Moreover, their texture and irregular beauty creates a simply stunning final upholstery effect. Similarly, the bicycle inner tube tires used to make the feathers of our TUI collection, bring the work to life, while at the same time stopping this rubber heading to landfill. We are so pleased at how these materials have brought a focus on how upcycling can be used to inspire luxury design.

RE-DEFINE

Finally, we are relishing using all new materials. The Piñatex used in our TUI Collection redefines the touch, feel, look and ethics of leather. Piñatex by Ananas Anam is a natural, non-woven material made from pineapple leaf fibre which can be used as an alternative to leather and petroleum-based textiles. Made of pineapple leaf fibre, itself a by-product of the agriculture industry, this is the epitome of sustainable material fabrication. No extra land, water or pesticides are required to produce the raw material and the dyes used for Piñatex are GOTS approved and the resins comply with AFIRM standards. Piñatex is also REACH compliant. Beyond that, it has a luxurious feel, warmth and appearance.

We are excited about what the future holds for the production and re-imagining of sustainable materials. Using and reusing resources that are both smart and sustainable continues to be a driving force behind our designs and inspiration. We believe strongly that luxury must not cost us the earth. In the end, your future is our future.
